There Is No Such Thing As Moisturizing Too Much……

But there is such thing as the wrong moisturizer for your skin.

Normal0falsefalsefalseEN-USJAX-NONE/* Style Definitions */table.MsoNormalTable{mso-style-name:"Table Normal";mso-tstyle-rowband-size:0;mso-tstyle-colband-size:0;mso-style-noshow:yes;mso-style-priority:99;mso-style-parent:"";mso-padding-alt:0in 5.4pt 0in 5.4pt;mso-para-margin:0in;mso-para-margin-bottom:.0001pt;mso-pagination:widow-orphan;font-size:12.0pt;font-family:Cambria;mso-ascii-font-family:Cambria;mso-ascii-theme-font:minor-latin;mso-hansi-font-family:Cambria;mso-hansi-theme-font:minor-latin;}

First and foremost, never skip moisturizing and here is why

1. When you cleanse your face, the exfoliating ingredients remove the good skin oils, often resulting in over-drying.

2. Skin needs moisture and without it, your skin is more susceptible to dryness   caused by the environment.

3. Dry skin is less elastic and can lead to the early development of fine lines and wrinkles.

Second order of business you need to use the right moisturizer for your skin type

Oily Skin

Indicators: Large pores and a sheen that develops quickly after you’ve cleansed.

Your Best Bet: If you’ve got oily skin, reach for an oil-free moisturizer. Try Kiehl's  Ultra Facial Oil Free Lotion, a light formula that conditions skin while keeping both hydration and oil levels balanced.

Dry Skin

Indicators: Your skin is often itchy, red, flaky, or generally tight.

Your Best Bet: After using a facial cleanser to shed dead skin cells, dry skin needs a moisturizer rich in essential oils to soothe and revive it. Try Mychelle Deep Repair Cream, A deeply restorative face cream that’s free of harsh chemicals and artificial ingredients. Bioactive EGF peptides promote cellular regeneration for enhanced firmness and elasticity. Shea butter hydrates and soothes dry skin for a softer and healthier-looking complexion. This fast-absorbing formula penetrates deeply without leaving the skin oily or clogged.

Combination Skin

Indicators: An oily T-zone (that’s your forehead, nose, and chin) alongside drier skin on the cheeks.

Your Best Bet: Treating combination skin is tricky because different areas call for different moisturizers. Try Dr. Haushka’s Day Rose Cream Light, a delicate and lightweight cream that is moisturizing enough for the drier areas of your face yet doesn’t leave face feel greasy or heavy.

Sensitive Skin

Indicators: You’re often prone to acne or other skin irritations.

Your Best Bet: Sensitive skin calls for something gentle that’s oil-free, paraben-free, and hypoallergenic. Try a moisturizer like Kush Cream’s Face and Eye Cream, which uses the anti-inflammatory benefits of cannabis to aid in soothing sensitive skin. Formulated with premium organic cannabis-infused emu oil and full cannabis extract to work with your natural pH, it’s scent-free and hypoallergenic for the most sensitive of skin types.

There Is Such Thing As Over Exfoliating…..

Normal0falsefalsefalseEN-USJAX-NONE/* Style Definitions */table.MsoNormalTable{mso-style-name:"Table Normal";mso-tstyle-rowband-size:0;mso-tstyle-colband-size:0;mso-style-noshow:yes;mso-style-priority:99;mso-style-parent:"";mso-padding-alt:0in 5.4pt 0in 5.4pt;mso-para-margin:0in;mso-para-margin-bottom:.0001pt;mso-pagination:widow-orphan;font-size:12.0pt;font-family:Cambria;mso-ascii-font-family:Cambria;mso-ascii-theme-font:minor-latin;mso-hansi-font-family:Cambria;mso-hansi-theme-font:minor-latin;}

Yes, you are dry, flaky and perhaps desperately battling ashy dull skin but over exfoliating is your enemy not your friend. When we exfoliate our skin we are not only removing the dead skin cells but we are also removing the oil that most of us are so lacking during these dry winter months. When we over exfoliate (as any more then two times a week), the skin actually becomes drier. Now don’t get me wrong exfoliation is a necessary part of keeping the skin moisturized. A build up of dead skin cells on the surface of the skin will prevent even the best moisturizers from penetrating your skin.  So rather then amp up the amount you exfoliate when you’re feeling dry try switching to a more gentle exfoliant and avoid exfoliates with salicylic- or glycolic-acid. My favorites are EvanHealy’s Facial Polish for the face and NYL Gentle Sugar Scrub for all the other parts.

Normal0falsefalsefalseEN-USJAX-NONE/* Style Definitions */table.MsoNormalTable{mso-style-name:"Table Normal";mso-tstyle-rowband-size:0;mso-tstyle-colband-size:0;mso-style-noshow:yes;mso-style-priority:99;mso-style-parent:"";mso-padding-alt:0in 5.4pt 0in 5.4pt;mso-para-margin:0in;mso-para-margin-bottom:.0001pt;mso-pagination:widow-orphan;font-size:12.0pt;font-family:Cambria;mso-ascii-font-family:Cambria;mso-ascii-theme-font:minor-latin;mso-hansi-font-family:Cambria;mso-hansi-theme-font:minor-latin;}

Let’s be real not only do dry cracked lips hurt but who would actually enjoy kissing that! That being said all the same rules that apply for the rest of your face apply to your lips as well.  So to reiterate yes, you must moisturize your lips. If said moisturizer is actually going to be of any benefit then you must exfoliate your pucker twice a week, but no more then. In the lip category my go to products right now are:  Lano Lips All Purpose Balm a super dense Lanolin balm that penetrates and locks in moisture and Fresh’s Brown Sugar Lip Scrub, which is so unbelievably delicious it will be tempting to not use everyday!

Use Face Oil But Not To Moisturize….

Normal0falsefalsefalseEN-USJAX-NONE/* Style Definitions */table.MsoNormalTable{mso-style-name:"Table Normal";mso-tstyle-rowband-size:0;mso-tstyle-colband-size:0;mso-style-noshow:yes;mso-style-priority:99;mso-style-parent:"";mso-padding-alt:0in 5.4pt 0in 5.4pt;mso-para-margin:0in;mso-para-margin-bottom:.0001pt;mso-pagination:widow-orphan;font-size:12.0pt;font-family:Cambria;mso-ascii-font-family:Cambria;mso-ascii-theme-font:minor-latin;mso-hansi-font-family:Cambria;mso-hansi-theme-font:minor-latin;}

Use Face Oil But Not To Moisturize….

I repeat: Face oils do not moisturize.  Oil isn’t readily absorbed into the skin, which is why it actually serves as a better cleanser rather then moisturizer. The good news is that by adding an oil to your moisturizer you gain an extra layer of protection against harsh winter elements. Try Jeffery James, GLOW, which uses Geranium essential oil to aid in stimulating circulation, brighten skin and encourage regeneration of skin cells. Organic Jojoba oil mimics skins natural sebum production to help tighten pores, leaving your skin soft and silky.

My Other Favorite way to use oil is to swap out your face wash for an oil cleanse. The basic idea of oil cleansing is to use natural oils to cleanse the skin and naturally balance the skin’s oils. This leaves your skin much more nourished and moisturized then traditional facial soaps and cleansers, which strip the skin of oil.  Stay tuned for a follow up post where I’ll break down the various types of oils and oil combinations that can be used for oil cleansing. I promise you the switch over is a game changer!

Humidifiers Aren’t Just For Colds…..

The enemy of thy hair is your skin’s best friend. Humidity our skin love, love loves it! Unfortunately, as the moisture levels in the air decrease the amount of moisture evaporated off the surface of our skin increases; thus drying out our skin. Humidifiers add moisture back into the air helping to combat dry cracked skin.  So stop using the humidifier just for colds and try sleeping with one by your bed at night.

Eat More Fatty Acids…….

Normal0falsefalsefalseEN-USJAX-NONE/* Style Definitions */table.MsoNormalTable{mso-style-name:"Table Normal";mso-tstyle-rowband-size:0;mso-tstyle-colband-size:0;mso-style-noshow:yes;mso-style-priority:99;mso-style-parent:"";mso-padding-alt:0in 5.4pt 0in 5.4pt;mso-para-margin:0in;mso-para-margin-bottom:.0001pt;mso-pagination:widow-orphan;font-size:12.0pt;font-family:Cambria;mso-ascii-font-family:Cambria;mso-ascii-theme-font:minor-latin;mso-hansi-font-family:Cambria;mso-hansi-theme-font:minor-latin;}

Our skin’s most crucial defense is the lipid barrier.  The building blocks of this barrier are essential fatty acids such as omega-3 and omega-6. If your diet is lacking in good fats your skin will certainly give you away. A diet rich in EFAs will leave you with hydrated, plumper, younger looking skin; whereas an EFA deficient diet will leave you with excessive dryness, inflammation, and an influx of whiteheads and blackheads. Try introducing more EFA rich foods into your day-to-day diet.

Here’s a list of the top 15 omega rich foods

     Mackerel: 6,982 milligrams in 1 cup cooked

       Salmon Fish Oil: 4,767 milligrams in 1 tablespoon

  Cod Liver Oil: 2.664 milligrams in 1 tablespoon

       Walnuts: 2,664 milligrams in 1/4 cup

Chia Seeds: 2,457 milligrams in 1 tablespoon

 Herring: 1,885 milligrams in 3 ounces

Salmon (wild-caught): 1,716 milligrams in 3 ounces

Flax Seed (ground): 1,597 milligrams in 1 tablespoon

 Tuna: 1,414 milligrams in 3 ounces

 White Fish: 1,363 milligrams in 3 ounces

Sardines: 1,363 milligrams in 1 can/3.75 ounces

Hemp Seeds: 1,000 milligrams  in 1 tablespoon

 Anchovies: 951 milligrams in 1 can/2 ounces

 Natto: 428 milligrams in 1/4 cup

 Egg Yolks: 240 milligrams in 1/2 cup

If none of those foods appeal to you simply taking a good EFA supplement, such as Nordic Naturals Complete Omega, will still greatly benefit your skin and your overall health.
